How to Live Longer

There are three tried and true tips that can show you how to live longer. You’ve probably heard the advice touted over and over in health magazines, on special news reports and maybe even heard it from your doctor before.

But the reason you get the same advice repeatedly is because it works. You’ve probably heard that you need to be careful what you put into your body. That would include avoiding the wrong foods, but it also includes addictive substances like nicotine.

To see a ripe old age, if you’re a smoker, then you should stop smoking. Even if you’ve smoked for years and think it’s too late for you to change now, understand that while it might be tough, you can stop.

There are fast acting benefits for your body when you stop smoking. You’ll be rid of the effects of nicotine on your system. Nicotine is also used in pesticides because it’s a nerve poison and it’s extremely addictive. When you stop smoking, you’ll enjoy better blood pressure and your heart won’t work as hard without this stimulant.

Learning how to live longer also includes maintaining a healthy body weight. Now what’s healthy for you might not be healthy for others, which is why you shouldn’t take the height/weight chart as an infallible method for judging what to weigh.

Your bone structure should be taken into account when figuring what your healthy weight should be. What’s obese for a five-foot woman will be radically different from what’s considered obese for a four or six-foot woman. Obesity means that a person has an unhealthy Body Mass Index (BMI) and being too overweight can shorten your life by almost fifty percent.

No matter what your health habits have been in the past, no matter what your weight is at this very moment, you can make changes that will help you become a ‘golden oldie.’ But, it’s known that people resist change. There’s comfort in what’s familiar, so make small steps rather than gigantic changes, which can feel overwhelming.

Taking part in a regular exercise routine is a major part of knowing how to live longer. If you absolutely hate exercise, then engage in something that you find fun that gets your body up and moving.

Try a rigorous dance routine, schedule regular tennis outings or make it a point of going swimming three to four times per week. Exercise isn’t just for people who need to lose weight. Exercise helps reduce stress, tone up muscles and keeps the heart healthier.
