Don't Ignore Signs of Dementia

The word alone is enough to strike fear in the heart of every senior citizen and a sense of anxiety in the hearts of family members. No one wants to talk about dealing with dementia. That's because dementia is a thief that robs families.

It can rob a person as well as a family as a whole. The word dementia itself is not a diagnosis. It's a term that's used to describe a symptom of an underlying health problem.

This is why people with Alzheimer's are said to have dementia. There are many diseases and healthy conditions that can bring on dementia. Dementia presents itself in people as they age in several ways.

It can affect the memory, but because people don't want to talk about or address the thought of dementia, excuses are given. It's labeled as just being forgetful or laughed off as just older age.

While some forgetfulness is normal in people of all ages, this type of forgetfulness is chronic and has other symptoms with it. You might notice personality changes.

When people get older and dementia begins to set in, it can change the way that a person behaves and responds. For example, an older person that's always been pleasant to be around could suddenly become hateful and lash out with harsh words that they normally wouldn't say.

If your loved one is suddenly acting out of character, you should pay attention to the rest of his or her behavior to see if you recognize other changes. Another part of dementia that people don't want to talk about is the lack of reasoning.

When dementia begins, the person struggling with it will begin to make unusual decisions. These decisions will be out of character. They may get confused easily such as trying to call their bank in the middle of the night and insisting that the bank is open.

They may lose track of financial balances and forget to pay bills. You may notice that where they were once clean and neat with their attire, they're now unkempt - and personal hygiene is lacking.

They may be confused about where they live and have difficulty finding their way home even if they've lived in the same location for decades. Cognitive decline is common with dementia and you'll notice that the language skills become impaired.

People who experience dementia struggle to form compound words or complex sentences. There are tests that your doctor can order that can diagnosis whether what you or a loved on is dealing with is actually dementia. Tests can also give an accurate picture as to the cause of the condition.
